^{Il y a un peu plus de six mois, nous vous parlions d'une série Netflix sur laquelle nous étions tombés un peu par hasard. Et nous vous disions à quel point nous avions été surpris par la qualité globale du programme histoire, suspense, jeu des acteurs et actrices, ambiance globale, décors, légèreté… Cette série Netflix comptait alors deux saisons et de nombreux fans à travers le monde. Elle a une troisième saison depuis le 9 juillet dernier et c'est encore une sacrée réussite. Cette série Netflix c'est Virgin River. Présentée comme un programme à la fois dramatique et romantique, elle oscille parfaitement entre les deux thématiques avec en sus une légèreté assez remarquable pour évoquer des sujets pas forcément très rigolos. Virgin River conte la nouvelle vie de Melinda Monroe comme tout le monde, vous l'appelerez vite Mel une infirmière qui quitte Los Angeles pour aller exercer son métier dans une petite ville perdue de Californie Virgin River. Nous sentons tout de suite que quelque chose cloche chez elle et que si elle est là c'est parce qu'elle a subi un sacré drame. C'est bien le cas mais pour ceux qui n'aiment pas les spoils, nous vous laissons découvrir la raison de sa tristesse et son envie d'évasion. Malheureusement pour elle, il y a un souci à Virgin River si les gens sont d'une gentillesse sans nom, chacun sait à peu près de tout ce qu'il se passe dans la vie des autres. Voulant passer un peu inaperçue, Mel va vite se rendre compte que c'est très simple de s'intégrer dans cette petite bourgade mais qu'il est impossible de cacher quoi que ce soit. Heureusement, elle va rencontrer Jack Sheridan, qui tient le Jack's Bar. Il apprend à connaître Mel, lui donne des conseils pour garder un peu de vie privée et l'aide à s'installer à Virgin River nous avons tous rêvé qu'une personne nous fasse une telle maison en si peu temps !. Bon, là vous vous dites qu'on est dans la pure eau de rose et que cela ne va guère vous intéresser plus de deux épisodes. Et bien détrompez-vous. Brand New Cherry Flavor episode 6 recap In a flashback to the shooting of the short movie, Brand New Cherry Flavor reveals that Lisa and Mary were lovers. Back in the 90s, and Lisa takes a milk bath in Boro’s yard whilst James tells Lou that Lisa is dead. Little does he know! With Mary eager to see Lisa’s dead body, both she and Lou are annoyed to find that Lisa isn’t dead. As Lisa soaks in the milk bath, Boro reveals her background. This is where Brand New Cherry Flavor gets a little crazy. Boro reveals that 900 years ago, she was a man, and he encountered a spirit living in an animal body which led to him and the white jaguar f*cking. One day, after hearing an army is heading towards him, the white jaguar taught him a ritual that gave him the ability to sense where his enemies were. As a result, he was able to set a trap and slaughter all of his enemies. But, because the ritual involved a toad, he was told to bring his wife. Although he tried to trick to jaguar by offering up a different woman, the jaguar didn’t fall for it. As a result, the jaguar bit off his balls and left him for dead. It all seemed hopeless until a young girl appeared and he jumped into her body. And that’s what Boro has done ever since! As for the jaguar, Boro heard that it was killed by the Spanish and made into a couch. Fully healed and back in her apartment, Lisa is disturbed by James. He tries to kill her, but, feeling fresh, Lisa kills him and practically bites off his head. Needing a hand, Lisa has Roy, Christine and Code clean up her mess. All of them deal with it relatively ok, except for Code. He freaks out and decides to stay behind whilst the body is dumped. This is when he spots Mary, who had been hiding in the closet, and after a brief conversation, they learn they’re both ex-lovers of Lisa. The ending Lisa describes killing James as like, “opening a birthday present — special”, whilst Mary visits Boro. Roy tells Lisa that “I can’t be addicted to you, and I don’t want to be, and I think this has to be goodbye for good”. In all fairness to Roy, covering up a murder can make you feel that way. Episode 6 of Brand New Cherry Flavor ends with Lisa finding Code dead. Someone or something has rammed an object into his eye. Horror fans got a real treat with Netflix's Brand New Cherry Flavor, an eight-part series set in the cutthroat world of early '90s Hollywood. Our story here follows Lisa Nova Alita Battle Angel star Rosa Salazar, a young filmmaker looking to expand her groundbreaking short film into a major motion picture. Along the way she meets sleazy-but-talented producer Lou Burke Eric Lange, a rising star actor Jeff Ward, and an eccentric woman who...is basically a witch the great Catherine Keener. The story is the best kind of horror—basic enough to follow, but with enough disgusting, David Cronenberg-esque body horror, and enough what the fuck? style David Lynch existentialism to really make you question just about every minute of what you just watched. Salazar has a rough edge to her protagonist that makes us root for her just enough, while Lange channels his inner Jeff Goldblum to play the slimy-but-charismatic type of Hollywood producer we've all heard so much about. The series gets increasingly gross and violent as it moves along, but when it finally reaches its conclusion, you may have one simple question what's next? Brand New Cherry Flavor is based on a novel, and while Season 1 only barely gets into the novel's storyline less than 100 pages in, to be precise, it changes enough that the story, really, is not following any sort of source material anymore outside of the basics. Could it pull a The Leftovers and expand its footprint far beyond the existing story? We'll have to see. Brand New Cherry Flavor isn't likely to have a Season some threads are left open that could certainly be expanded upon in a potential Season 2—Boro taking on a new body, Lisa going to Brazil, Lou still being alive but blind—every piece of branding in the show's marketing campaign has referred to Brand New Cherry Flavor as a "limited series." In full, the show's official poster and on Netflix's platforms it's called "A Netflix Limited Series," which pretty definitively means the story that was meant to be told got told. Now, that's not to say it definitely won't come back. Netflix called The Queen's Gambit a limited series, but many in that show's cast have teased a potential return. But Netflix has mostly kept to its 'Limited Series' promise with shows, with When They See Us, Unbelievable, and Godless as a few other key examples. If you look over to Netflix's rival, HBO, though, there's a bit more precedent, as initially-planned limited series including Big Little Lies, True Detective, and, most recently, The White Lotus, have all gotten eventual Season 2 pickups. In short we've probably seen the end of this story—but you never WEISMILLER WALLACE/NETFLIXThere could be more where Brand New Cherry Flavor came from, though. While Brand New Cherry Flavor seems likely to be a one-and-done series on Netflix, creator Nick Antosca has long focused on telling short and contained horror stories. Before he moved to Netflix with Cherry Flavor, he resided over SyFy's Channel Zero, another very dark and often disturbing horror series that told four distinct stories over the course of its four seasons on air. He also was the showrunner of Hulu's Emmy-winning The Act, which told its Mundchausen by Proxy story in one limited season. He's even a 2009 Shirley Jackson Award winner for Best Novella for Midnight Picnic. In short? The man knows how to write a scary story, and wrap it up on his own clock. Does that not sound similar to another major horror player for Netflix? Mike Flanagan has evolved into one of the biggest names in horror over the last decade, and while he's had successful movies in theaters like Doctor Sleep and Ouijia Origin of Evil, its been his Netflix series that have really taken off. The Haunting of Hill House was a smash when it first landed in 2018, and its follow-up, The Haunting of Bly Manor was a similar success in 2020. Flanagan's next, Midnight Mass, is hitting Netflix next month with another series, The Midnight Club, currently in production. Which is to say if Brand New Cherry Flavor winds up hitting on Netflix—and with strong early returns critically, it should—it could be a great opportunity for the streaming giant to give Antosca the Flanagan treatment, and just let him keep telling whichever terrifying, creepy, single-season-contained stories he wants to.
